Since 1988, the El Vendrell coast has enjoyed Blue Flag status. It is often considered to be one of the best beaches in Catalonia. El Vendrell is a lovely place for sunbathing and enjoying water sports, while the beach promenade bordering it still maintains some noucentisme-style homes and old liquor stores. Just before you come across the old Sant Joan de Déu Hospital (which is now a 5-star hotel), you will find Les Madrigueres, which is a natural space used by a large number of migratory birds. Coma-ruga Beach also has La Masia Blanca Marine Reserve, which is a submerged space native to sandy beaches with a gentle gradient. The fauna and flora protected here are generally representative of more than half of the Catalan coast.
